The Commission for GOUV affairs in Venezuela started a new intervention and observation project, the Observatory of Political Movements in Guayana Esequiba (OPMGE). The main objective of this project is to analyze the political situation and the course of negotiations between Venezuela and Guyana. In view of the importance of the geopolitical impact that it is currently causing, the GOUV Presidency, which is currently in Romania (presidency pro-tempore 2023) was invited to participate in a debate on the Consultative Referendum organized by the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, regarding the protection of the territory of Guayana Esequiba.
The event featured a historical presentation about the territory that is under dispute between Venezuela and Guayana. The presentation was guided by H.Ex. Mr. José de Jesus Sojo, Ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Bucharest. From the acts of Spanish colonization in the Americas to current times. The diplomat also explained about the international treaties that Venezuela takes into consideration when assessing the sovereignty of the territory and also about historical factors regarding Guayana Esequiba.

In addition, the event also featured a presentation by a Venezuelan citizen who lives in Romania, Mrs. Maria Luisa Contreras. The speaker spoke about the importance of this dispute for the Venezuelan people and also about how the majority of the population accepts this conflict. It was also featured in his speech. In an interview with us, Ms. Contreras presented six historical moments, from the time of the conquest of Venezuela to today, that, according to the Venezuelan people’s view, prove that the territory belongs to Venezuela. The presenter in an interview and conversation with our team mentions: “this territory continues and will always continue to belong to the Venezuelan people and that is why Venezuela today more than ever tells the world that Esequiba belongs to Venezuela”.

After the conversation on the topic in question, our team had the opportunity to thank the diplomatic team for the invitation and we went to a refreshment offered by the Embassy where we could debate with members of the Romanian entity about the topic, in addition to providing networking with representatives of companies, education professionals and other departments of society as a whole.
